The photography of Dean W. Lodmell
Dean
W. Lodmell has been an avid photographer since picking up his first
camera in Dacca, East Pakistan in 1969.
Internationally, he was one of the youngest war photographers in Bangladesh. He was evacuated from Dacca in the spring of 1972 having spent 18 hours with all of his worldly possesions before boarding a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight to Karachi.
He was also one of the youngest photographers to visit wartime Vietnam in 1972.
His first paid assignment was the documentation of the construction of Washington Public Power Supply Systems Nuclear Reactors 3 and 5 in the late 1970's. One vivid moment involved photographing from the top of a partially constructed cooling tower. After climbing temporary staircases made of scaffolding his zoom lens fell off its mount and was on its way to a spectacular crash when he was able to react quickly and knock it back onto the walkway--- only a galvanized handrail separated him and the ground 600 feet below.
Throughout a five decade career as a freelancer and corporate photographer, he has enjoyed using Canon cameras, including the Canon Dial 35, Canon FT-b, Canon AE-1, Canon A-1, Canon T-50, Canon T-70, Canon EOS IX, Canon Ixus, Canon S-100, Canon D-30, Canon S-400, and Canon 1D. While he primarily shoots with Canon products, he uses others as dictated by the moment including Kodak, Nikon and Sigma.
His main photographic server contains over 975 gigabytes of online storage. This server holds a collection of over 200,000 images including scans of photographs dating to the early 1900's taken by both of his grandfathers, each of whom employed photography in their professions. His paternal grandfather, Anton M. Lodmell, used photography to document his practice of dentistry. His maternal grandfather, Viljo R. Maki, used photography in his work in the Vermont Marble Company's printing department.
The image collection includes a wide variety of subjects including Sporting , Commercial, Landscape, Architectural, Portrait, Aerial, and Astrological.
His images have been used by corporations, media, individuals and non-profit institutions in print, electronic, and animated forms.
He ready, willing and able to accept assignments on the spur of the moment, anywhere in the world, visa permitting. He may be contacted via phone or fax at +1 212 656 1332.
